Payment Gateway Integration in Costa Rica: BAC, Promerica, GreenPay Compared
Stripe doesn't work in most of Latin America. Here's how BAC, Promerica, GreenPay, and PayPal compare for e-commerce in Costa Rica.
If you’re building e-commerce in Latin America, payment processing is more complicated than it should be. Most platforms default to Stripe or US-based processors that don’t work here.
BAC
The largest bank in Central America. Solid integration, but the certification process can be lengthy. Best for established businesses with high transaction volumes.
Promerica
Similar to BAC in terms of coverage and reliability. Slightly different API structure. Good alternative if BAC certification is taking too long.
GreenPay
The modern option. Faster integration, better developer documentation, more startup-friendly. If you’re building a new store from scratch, GreenPay is usually our first recommendation.
PayPal
Add it alongside a local gateway for international customers. Not a replacement for local payment processing, but a good complement.
Our recommendation
For most new e-commerce projects in Costa Rica, we start with GreenPay for speed, then add BAC or Promerica once the store is live and processing volume justifies the certification effort.
